My Last Blog. . .

It was September 2007 when I wrote the first Land of spirit blog.  Of course, it was only an announcement of the upcoming first Land of Spirit show for 2008  - but it was a blog!  I’m not sure I even knew at the time what a blog was – I never had a need to blog but with the coming of Franklin County’s new folk life play we needed to share this great news with the world.    Well, today June 21, 2010 I am writing my last Land of Spirit blog.

As of last weekend I am no longer serving as Co Producer, my bouts of asthma will not allow me to continue, so I sadly say good bye. This week I am trying to finish up prior commitments I had made – like completing the 2010 – 120 Page, full color, hard back book of  Ahhhhhh Shot in the Arm photographs of storytellers, auditions, public reading of the play, rehearsals, scenes from the play and supporting volunteers.  It will be for sale to the public by A Greater Lavonia Community, Inc. and proceeds will be used to help with future plays.

Working with Land of Spirit has been almost a daily part of my life for almost 5 years.  Although this is the third year for a play, planning and preparations began a long time ago.  It was June 2005 when Genny Cole and I attended a heritage and tourism workshop and first heard the success story of Swamp Gravy, down in Colquitt/Miller County, Georgia.  We knew then, this was what was needed for our community – not only would it bring in tourism to help the economy but it would offer a new art form to our citizens, and most especially art for our children.  And, the bonus would be the preservation of the history of our community as told by those who were born or have lived in this community we call the Land of Spirit.

It hasn’t been an easy road to success.  There was a foundation to establish, money to be raised, volunteers to recruit, a theatre to build, stories to collect, and the list goes on and on.  But, through determination and hard work this community has created a folk life play that rivals any in the world.  There is talent in this community – from cast and crew members – and when they pulled together an organization was created that we’ve been proud to call the Land of Spirit Family.   It’s a family that welcomed anyone who wanted to be in the play or serve as a volunteer.  Each season The Family has numbered around 75-80 Cast Members and this season the Volunteer Crew numbered 80, as well.

It has been my pleasure to serve as Co- Producer, along with Genny Cole.  There are no paid employees of A Greater Lavonia Community, Inc. – the operating board for Land of Spirit.  However, in Genny’s role as Director of the Lavonia Downtown Development Authority and Better Home Town, she has been allowed to work  on the play which benefits our local businesses.  However, she is like me – she has given many, many hours of her personal time as a Land of Spirit Volunteer.

I’m sure the tasks we performed are not that of a regular show producer.    You see, we have limited funds so Genny and I have done everything  from write grants to the cleaning of restrooms and emptying trash at the theatre.  Since we are rather opposite in the talents we bring to the table, our roles as co-producer can only be described as true team work.

It’s been a fun project and no one has been easier to work with than Genny Cole.  She’s done a lot for the City of Lavonia and being a city resident, I appreciate what she does on and off the payroll to make our community a better place to live.

I hope you have enjoyed reading the Land of Spirit blogs and please come back soon -  I’m sure there will be another volunteer who will step forward and they will be blogging in no time!

Meanwhile, if you haven’t seen this year’s play – CALL NOW FOR TICKETS!  There are two weekends left – June 24-25-26 and July 1-2-3.  Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 7:30 and Saturday Matinees at 2:30.   Call 706-356-1926 or 706-356-8202 for reservations.  Visa and MasterCard are accepted and you can pick up your tickets at the Will Call Desk when you come to the theatre OR you may purchase tickets in Lavonia at the downtown historic Depot – and, tickets may be purchased at the door as long as they are available.

Sorry I will not see you at the theatre, but Genny & the Cast will be there waiting for you!   Judy Hulsey

Saturday Matinee

On Saturday afternoons at 2:30, Land of Spirit players take the stage to sell out crowds – or, at least most of the matinees are sold out shows.    And, most of these tickets are sold to groups.  Last Saturday, June 12, was no exception.  The theatre was full and the Players played at their best.  I’m not an actor, but I imagine it’s much easier to play to a full house than a small group.

But, a full house brings new challenges – that of sitting all attendees together with their particular group – and, to accommodate those with disabilities.  It took a little planning for last Saturday, but Genny Cole got it together and all attendees appeared to be happy.  At least the 28 Hulsey Family & Friends that came with me were pleased.  But, with the Land of Spirit theatre being ‘almost’ in the round, there are NO BAD SEATS!  Some may be a little higher than others, but those with the Hulsey’s did not seem to mind having back row seats – they laughed and cried at the stories being told, just as if they had been on the front row.

As I was helping seat our family, I met some wonderful people from Young Harris United Methodist Church in Athens.  They had seats that adjoined our family – and, much to my surprise a lady stands up from this group and says – “ Hi Judy, remember me?”   And, after a brief hesitation I said “yes, you are Gwen, aren’t you?” – we had gone to North Georgia Tech together 48 years ago and had lived in the dorm just down the hall from one another.  How time flies! I think ‘Time & Mother Nature’ has been good to Gwen – dang it, she looked so much younger than me.   Oh well, life has been good to me, too, so I cannot complain – But, it was good to see her and when we said good by later on, she was thrilled with the show!

It’s almost time for the show to begin.  One week from today is the preview VIP night when LOS Players perform for those who have contributed financially to the play, those whose stories are in the play, and special guests.   It’s a fun but hectic evening!

We begin early that day with a Reception at 5:45 – this year it’s sponsored by Ty Cobb Healthcare and the Lavonia Garden & Woman’s Clubs.  Trying to serve 200 guests and get them into the theatre by 7:10 can be a challenge with the limited room we have.  But,usually it’s such a festive mood that people don’t seem to mind that it’s a bit crowded – there is laughter and anticipation for the evening ahead!

At 7:10, AGLC, Inc. takes time to say THANKS to all those who have made this year’s play possible.  And, that’s a lot of people.  In 2010 we have 79 LOS Players; 6 from CPI group – Richard, Jules, Iega, Joe and Brackley; Heather, Kit, & Brett LOS Music Team; 60+ 2010 LOS Supporters; 15+ story tellers; and local elected officials who support the production in numerous ways.  We don’t have enough seating room to invite all the LOS Volunteers, which is another 80+, but without their contributions the play could not be presented.  Some will be working VIP night to make those attending more comfortable.

And, at 7:30 when all the recognitions are over, the Play begins!  What an exciting time – hard to explain the feeling that goes over cast and crew when the curtain goes up (if there was a curtain) – this is like theatre in the round so there are no theatre curtains.  So, we depend upon our wonderful technical crew to set the stage for opening – with music, lighting, and special effects they make it appear as an opening on Broadway (so, I’m getting a little dramatic after only 3 years of hanging around theatre people – but, it is  spectacular)!

This year is a little different, in that at intermission VIP Guests will be treated to Dessert.  As I said earlier, we begin with a reception – but, there is hardly time for a sweet ending – so, Ty Cobb Health Care and the Ladies from the Clubs are serving cake, cookies and brownies at intermission.  Then, it’s back to the Second Act of the show and the special ending of the play.  I can say no more on the blog and spoil the show, you have to come see how it ends for yourself.

Programs are scheduled to arrive today or tomorrow, Barbara Busby who is editor of Country Roads Resource Guide (for Franklin Hart and Stephens County) is a member of the LOS Technical Team – along with daughter Shelby.  Daughter Emily and son Ryan are LOS Cast.  Barbara, as part of her volunteer work, serves as editor and publisher of the Land of Spirit Gazette.  How fortunate we are to have someone who has these talents to generously give of her time and expertise to publish this program.  And, it’s not your ordinary program – it’s a newspaper about the LOS Production – with interesting articles and lots of photographs. Plus Cast bios for all 79 players!

Kays Cap Company, the most famous of Cap makers, is generously donating 25 Nursing Caps for this production and they’re expected in on Saturday! Is it not wonderful that we have companies – not even located in Franklin County – but, who are willing to make donations and supply us with needs for the show.  That is Community Spirit from USA Businesses –  so, I’ll take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to Kays Caps and others who still manufacture on USA soil!

Costumes are being altered and pressed – seamstresses from the area have come to our aid again to produce those costumes which could not be purchased.

Joe Varga is producing art work for set design that is absolutely unbelievable – he is a master at freehand drawing!    You will not recognize this year’s LOS Main stage when Joe puts his finishing touches to the stage, mixed with medical props Chet Ford has loaned for this production.  It’s magic how the theatre can be transformed from one era to another with the stroke of Joe’s charcoal crayons and paint!

Iega is still putting the pizzazz to each scene with his amazing choreography and Brackley Frayer, Lighting Designer, is expected in later this week.  He, along with the LOS Technical Team, will work almost day and night until opening, setting and programming lights for the production – and, adding those beautiful special effects.  Just a hint – remember this play has the legendary Ty Cobb as a character – and, you cannot have Ty Cobb without baseball – thus, the technical team will transform a theatre into a ball park at the touch of a switch!  Come see this happen – you will be amazed, too!

Okay, enough play secrets for one day – get your ticket NOW!  The Saturday June 12 Matinee is now sold out and the Saturday June 19 Matinee is selling very strong – along with other evening performances.  Please don’t wait about getting tickets – we certainly don’t want you to miss this year’s production! Call 706-356-1926 or 706-356-8202 for reservation – if they should happen to be in the theatre, leave a message and they will get back in touch with you very soon – they accept Visa and Master Card.  You can then pick  up your ticket at the theatre Will Call Desk when you come see the play!

Have a blessed day and I’ll see you at the theatre, Judy

At long last we have a Group Page on Facebook.  It’s the “Land of Spirit Family” - so cast, crew, supporters & patrons of the arts can all become a member of our Family on Facebook!

We’ve already started working on LOS 2010 - Genny, Jules & others have been interviewing and getting new stories for the ALL NEW PLAY which just might have something to do with medicine or it may be a surprise.  We’re fortunate in having one of the most talented writers in the business, Jules Corriere.  You just never know what she can pull from those interviews and the play make take on an all new focus.  Whatever it turns out to be - I guarantee it will be a super production.

Oh yes, we’ve been working in the theater this month as well. We’ve done a bit of re-organizing and I think cast will be pleased when they see the results.  We’re getting close to having real dressing rooms - with partitions, mirrors, and a place to hang your hat!

Got to run now - there’s more to do and it’s already way past my bedtime.

See you at the theater, Judy

The title of tonight’s blog are lines in the play by Josephine Bratcher as she says World War II has ended.  And, cast sing “hooray, hooray, hooray. . .”  Tonight those lines were said and sung by Genny Cole and me (Co-Producers of Land of Spirit) as we closed up the theater.  Another successful season comes to a close!

They gave a marvelous performance for their last show -  to a SOLD OUT house!  Before the show began the audience was already showing their excitement through laughter and expressions of anticipation.  And, speaking of audience - let me mention we had special folks come see the show tonight:  Jerry Grillo, Co-writer with Jo Carson, from Headwaters Folk Life Play at Sautee-Nacoochee and Lisa Mount - Lisa is a former Artistic Director for Headwaters and is still active in the association.  Headwaters begin July 9 and runs through July 26.  I’m hoping to get up to Helen to see their new play. Genny and I both made it up for their last two shows.  It’s a true sign of professionalism when we can go and enjoy each other’s performances and not think of them as competition.  Being in the community performance arena is a little different from other type theater projects.  When the play is written from real, true life stories from you community it’s a little hard to be competitive!

I, personally, saw the play tonight through a video camera - one that belongs to Angela Whiby (a cast member  and Franklin Co. Commissioner).  It was the first time I had used the camera and Angela had less than five minutes to tell me how to turn in on and off, how to pause, and how to zoom.  What she did NOT tell me was what to do if I got an error message!  Well, everything was going fine until about three or four scenes from the end of Act I.  All of a sudden a message appears - it said something like “Power source closing” and in a matter of moments it cut off.”  Angela had said to wave my hand if anything went wrong and she would come to me.  Wouldn’t you know that when I looked up and waved, there was no one to see my wave.    I looked all around the set - no Angela.  Next, I looked down and in front of me was Eliza Kate Floyd - young but intelligent young girl.  She handed me a note - it said, “The red light is not blinking, is it on pause?” signed Angela.  I look and look and still could not locate Angela.  Meanwhile the show is going on - only one scene which happened to be a long one.  I said to Eliza Kate, please go get Angela.  She said, “who”?  I repeated the name Angela - she again said “who”?  She turned and started to go toward the lights of the next scene coming up on Main Stage - and, when I looked up - Angela was ON the stage - saying her lines.  In panic I said, “No - No Eliza Kate - just forget it.”   I thought for sure she was going up on stage to get Angela!    All this happened in just a matter of a minute or two - so I cut the camera off  - cut if back on and tried it again.  Nothing.  The second scene went by (the one with Angela in it) and I turned it on and off again.  (I had thought to myself - surely this thing must work like a computer - you know when you spend 45 mintures on hold waiting for someone from technical support to answer your call and when they finally do, they tell you to cut your computer off - wait a minute and turn it back on and everything is okay.)   But just in case, I said a little prayer to God - please let this thing come back on - AND IT DID!   By the time Angela finished her scene and got back to me, the camera was going again.  However, two scenes are missing.  We’re hoping those two scenes will be available from two other times it has been taped - somehow we have to edit these tapes and get ONE good DVD so that we can sell it next year, as we did this year with The Last Hard Times.

By the time the show ended I was pretty well exhausted -from the stress of trying to get everything right on this tape.  I’ll tell you one thing, it makes me have a lot more appreciation of those who video tape for a living.  Next year I hope we won’t wait so late to video tape the shows - but, come to think of it - I said the same thing during last year’s show.  Either I am a slow learner or my memory is worse that I thought.  IF someone reading this blog will just remind me next year, I will be ever so grateful!

AND SHE SAID YES - this should have been the title of tonight’s blog.  As we gathered for our prayer circle tonight, Jules said that John Thompson had something he wanted to say.  He stepped out of the circle and said, “these are the hardest lines I’ve had to get out since the play started, then he turned - looked at Kit McCluskey - knelt down on one knee - took Kit’s hand and said “Will you marry me?”  The cast and crew went wild.  Kit’s beautiful face went red. . . she was surprised, smiling, laughing and shedding a tear or two!  The Colonel yelled out, “well give her some sugar son - it’s not rationed anymore and if it were, I would say approved.”  Those are lines from the play!   Then the cast starting yelling, “what did she say, what did she say,” - John yelled back, “She said Yes.”

I must have taken over 2000 pictures during this show and wouldn’t you know, I did not have my camera for the most important scene yet.  However, Angela had turned the video camera on - so John’s proposal is all on tape!  The cast was already hyper because this was their last show, John’s proposal just raised them up another notch or two on the hyper scale!  When the theater doors opened, they were raring to go.  And, by the time the show ended Cast were trying to plan John’s and Kit’s wedding for the theater!

Before the last notes from the closing song, Land of Spirit, was finished - tears were already flowing.  Young children, teenagers, and - yes - even adults  were sad to see it come to a close.  We talk alot about the Land of Spirit Family and when it comes to a night like this - it is evident.  Sure, we’re tired and exhausted from 6 weeks of rehearsals and 5 weekends of shows - but, when family is separated - we don’t think of the exhaustion, we think of how much we’ll miss each other’s smiling faces.  We’ll all go our separate ways but come February 2010, I just bet you most of the family will be back!  There are a few going off to college and their schedules  may not allow their participation - but, once a Spirit Kid or Spirit Adult - always a Spirit Family Member.  We know they’ll be back as soon as they can!

Speaking of Family, it brings back memories of my being at North Georgia Tech.  While President there, our theme song was “We Are Family.”  If it was at a school dance, or any school event, and this song was played, all Administration, Faculty and Students would hit the floor -  dancing and singing -  We are family!  Maybe next year, as each Land of Spirit show ends, we’ll play this song, along with this year’s song -  Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Ain’t No Mountain Low Enough - to keep me away from YOU!

Tonight I feel as if I have written a book instead of a blog, but so many thoughts are going through my mind.   I’ve talked and talked but still have not mentioned the performance of tonight’s actors:  Both Maggie and Jennie Miller did their lines really well - and, loud.  As usual, their mom Valecia was spectacular in the role of Joyce; Lucy Long did a good job; Morgan’s Liar’s Club added another member for tonight’s show and it just made for more laughter (on stage - they laugh at their own lines); Roy Benifield and Marvin Lowry were super in “Twenty Questions” - as the Walker and the Sheriff;  The Home Demonstration Ladies dropped a line or two, but that’s probably because some were adding lines and it was throwing other off - but, as usual they brought laughter to the house;  Spencer Arp and Charlie Turner were right on with their Chocolate, Sweet Sweet Chocolate lines; Regan Floyd was funny and brough lots of laughter when she inserted “we didn’t have text-ing” instead of saying “we didn’t have telephones back then”; and,  Victoria Young gave the performance she always gives - one of a professional  - instead of a volunteer community player.

There are other LOS actors who don’t get a lot of what I call “spotlight time” in this production, but who are the spine of the play.   They resemble the spine of the human - they have little nerves running out to all parts of the body - each one has designated or limited lines in the play but  they sing and dance; they assist others in scenes; help with props; and, they join together to contribute 125% while on the floor.   These ladies and gentlemen include:  Matthew Sosby; Robin Betts; Barbara Burdette; Barbara Clarke;  ; Angela Whiby; Krista McRee; along with younsters Hollen Vitale; Alexa Westmoreland; Morgan Cooper; Riley Whitworth and Olivia York.

Okay, so I have rambled enough for tonight - it’s after 2:00 AM - July 4, 2009.  Yep, Independence Day - the Birthday of our great country.  We thank all those who have come before us  - those who founded this great nation and to those who have fought to keep it free.  And, as a recent email encouraged us to do - we say thanks to two individuals:  First to God who saved our soul and next to a service man or woman who saved our freedom.  Happy Birthday USA - a place we’re proud to call home!

See you at the theater, Judy

It’s hard to believe that Land of Spirit has come and gone so quickly - one more show tonight (Friday, July 3) and it’s time to move on to Land of Spirit 2010!  Friday night is already a SELL OUT - as was Thursday night!

We had lots of people come to the theater tonight expecting to buy tickets at the door - and they were all sold out before 5 O’clock - and, by around 6:00 PM the Friday show was sold out.  What wonderful problems for AGLC to have - but, I felt so sorry for those who had waited until the last weekend - and, now they have missed the show.

There were a few who came and waited patiently in the USO Canteen (concessions area) until time for the show to begin and if any one failed to attend, they wanted their seats.  We were able to  seat about 6 this way - a few actually sat around the stage where actors usually sit between scenes - and, one of our technical crew’s husband (and two cast member’s dad) actually stood the entire performance so that he could see his chilcren perform.  He works out of town and had not been able to come earlier in the season.

Our cast seems to thrive on large audiences.  Again tonight they performed as if they owned the show - and, they did own it!  They were high energy and right on the money - no pauses between their scenes.  There were a few missed lines - but, unless you had seen the play as many times as I have, you probably would have not known it.  Cast moved right along and covered for those missed lines - even in the children’s scene.  It is amazing how “professional: they have become in such a short time.  Richard Geer, you would be so proud of how the show has gone - You did good.

As I think back to the day we had ‘auditions,’ I remember a young man moving in a piano for his Mom and sister.  And, helping move the piano was another gentleman who was a friend.  They got the piano set up and then they sat around and watched actors come in, register, and read lines for a part.  After some time, I asked this young man if he was not going to audition for a part.  He said, “No mam, I haven’t given it much thought - I just came to help my mother, Heather McCluskey.”  I responded, “Well here is the form - fill it out - we need all the men we can get for this play.”  That was my initial meeting with Brett McCluskey.  Brett did fill out the form, along with his friend John Thompson.  Both these guys have amazed us (and themselves) with their performances in this show.

“John is a comedian, and all he needs is an agent” - is the way he is described by several cast members.    He has taken the role in Morgan Hardware Liar’s Club and made it his own.  And, when he plays the role of Uncle George in the Black Market scene I still laugh after 18 shows and 6 weeks of rehearsals.  He is so genuine with his portrayal of Uncle George in the Black Market scene!

And, what can I say about Brett - he has played the role of Charlie without a double.  Charlie is in and out of scenes through out the play.  And, Brett comes back in another scene as one of the Black Market guys.  He makes about four or five costume changes every night.  He has not missed a show or a rehearsal.  And, he is the first to help other actors with their props and has even helped his sister out with playing the piano for rehearsals.  You see, all the McCluskey’s are so very musically talented -  Mom Heather, Father Bill, Children Brett and Kit, and grandson Steven (who played Tommy Scott in last year’s show).  It is amazing to hear them all sing and play - and, now we have Brett as an actor.  And the funny thing is - Brett even sounds as if he could be from the South.  As far as I know he has lived his entire life in California until moving to Lavonia a few months ago.  I sure hope he remains in Lavonia - I feel sure there is another role for him in Land of Spirit 2010.  Plus, he’s a nice, soft spoken, polite young man to his elders.  He has that ’spirit’ that comes from the people of Franklin County -

Another family that is amazing is the Bruce/Thompson family.  I say Bruce because there is Mom Peggy Bruce, son Chip Bruce, daughter Beverly Thompson, and son-in-law Jeff Thompson.  Theater is not new to Jeff Thompson.  He has been in community theater for close to ??? 25+ years(you can tell I really don’t know how many years) - he has been actor, director, or has done whatever was needed to have a successful show.  But, for the rest of the family they only recently became involved.  Both Peggy and Beverly were in Land of Spirit 2008 and Chip made his first appearance in this year’s play.   Both years in LOS has been special because some of the scenes they have acted in were actually stories told by Mom Peggy.  And, this year was even more special - Jeff has played the role of Colonel which in real life was Peggy’s father - Mayor Homer Gaines.  And, Peggy has played the role of her father’s secretary when he was head of the Rationing Board.

As for Chip - those who know him - cannot believe he is on stage in a play!  He is a fine young man, an Auto Body Specialist by trade.  But, not one who has ever shown an interest in theater - until now.   I don’t know how he came to be in LOS ( I suspect it was Mom Peggy) but I do know I hope he comes back in 2010.  He has done a terrfic job in his roles this year as Serviceman Roy Campbell, as Morgan in Morgan’s Liar’s Club and in the Black Market Scene.

Beverly has the voice of an angel.  She has a solo in the Victory Garden scene and after 18 shows and all rehearsals, it still moves me (almost to tears) every time I hear her sing.  And, how she has been able to play this heavy emotional role of Joyce (in real life Nita Jones) has been amazing.  Both she and Valecia Miller ( Double in the role of Joyce) could hardly get through the scenes because of crying when rehearsals first began,  but soon they learned to deal with their emotions and now they both give a very moving potrayal  of Nita Jones.

As for Mom Peggy - she is approaching her 82nd or 83rd (?) birthday and puts the younger girls to shame with her stamina.   Peggy keeps physically fit by walking and staying busy with church, social, and community projects.  Now if we can just get Mom Peggy to bring the grandchildren for roles in LOS 2010  it will definitely be a ‘family affair.’

I’ve run out of time and energy for tonight.  Time to stop blogging and get some shut-eye!

See you at the theater, (IF you already have your ticket)

If you haven’t seen Gas Sugar Nylons and Chocolate Bars time is running out and you only have two chances left - Thursday or Friday night of THIS WEEK!

Tonight (yes, it’s after 2 in the morning and I just got around to blogging) will be a special performance - in the audience will be our wonderful Story Tellers for 2009!  And, our governing boards, crew members, and those from the City of Lavonia who have helped us throughout the year to produce our second play.  Once the show ends at 9:30 we plan to eat and have a little fun - celebrating another successful season for Land of Spirit.

Oh yes, did you see the Franklin County Citizens today?  A FULL COLOR PAGE of photos from the play.  Denise and the folks at the Citizens have been so very supportive this year.  Almost every week since rehearsals began, there has been an article and most weeks a photograph, as well.  That’s  part of the ’spirit’ we talk about in the play - the spirit of our people who are proud to call Franklin County home!  Without the help of our community members, there would not be a play.  It takes lots and lots of money and lots and lots of volunteer time - and, even if we had all the money we needed,  we couldn’t do it without our volunteers.   Yes, they are PRICELESS - cast and crew!

And even though we have been working for 6 weeks of rehearsals and 4 weeks of shows - we’re already talking of how we will miss each other when it ends Friday night.  Sure we are tired, but the friendships that are formed during this time are special.  Young and old alike bond together and create the Land of Spirit Family.  We care about and for each other.  But, if all goes well - we’ll be back for Land of Spirit 2010!

As a matter of fact, Genny Cole is already arranging for interviews to get new stories.  We hope to spend some time in July going to Royston, Carnesville and other unincorporated areas of the county so as to have plenty of stories for the playwright to select from.  If you happen to be reading this blog and know of someone, or if you want to tell stories, give Genny a call at 706-356-1926 to arrange for an interview!  YOU could become the star of next year’s production!

And, if cast and crew are reading the blog - don’t forget to bring your recipes for the ALL NEW Land of Spirit Cookbook for 2009!  Three main categories:  Chocolate, Sweet Sweet Chocolate;  Sugar Substitute recipes; and, recipes to use those veggies grown in your Victory Garden!  There will lots more sub-categories!  It’s shaping up to be a very unique cookbook - and, it will have 70 Pictures from this year’s show!

Got to sleep now, see you at the theater, Judy

It’s 11:45 PM and my day at the theater began today around noon. . . that’s close to 12 hours and two performances later!  But, what a jam packed 12 hours - they just flew by and now we’re down to two remaining performances of Gas Sugar Nylons and Chocolate Bars!

Tickets are still available for Thursday July 2 and Friday July 3 and then, “That’s All Folks.”   If you’re reading this blog and have not seen the show - stop and call right now for tickets!  The number is 706-356-1926!  OR, 706-356-8202 -

We had a Tour Bus today from Lawrenceville, GA. - carrying “Seniors on the Go.”  These 52 seniors were so full of life and each one left the theater laughing, shaking hands and saying “We’ll be back next year, but let us know if you have a show any time sooner!”  They were so friendly and it gave the cast the boost they needed for staying on a high for two shows.

And, there were other groups:  Martin Baptist Church; Frolicking Friends Red Hat Group from Anderson, SC; New Salem Baptist Church; Young Harris Methodist from Athens, GA; and, groups from Washington, GA;  Centerville, GA. and family groups with members coming from several cities across Georgia.  It was a packed house for the Matinee and almost a packed house for the evening performance.

I don’t know if I have said so before, but I tabulate the Audience Evaluations for each show.  I have yet to tabulate both shows for today, but I did glance through many of the returned forms and read a few comments.  There were a couple comments re: cast members adding lines to the play re: current political situations.  The responding audience members felt this might have been in poor taste.  And, I personally tend to agree with the audience.  It’s easy to get caught up in the hype of the news media and forget the feelings of people involved.  Also, Land of Spirit is about real, true life stories of people who grew up or have lived in Franklin or surrounding counties at one time or another - and, adding lines to the play can take away from the original intent of the scene.  We thank our audience for their comments and we promise we’ll try and do better in the future.

Tabulating these evaluations can be time consuming, but we feel it’s critical to the success of  Land of Spirit for us to be aware of  what our audience thinks and feels about their experiences in our theater - and, in our community.   We put in months of hard work, mostly by volunteers, and it’s important for us to feel good about what we do.  You’ve heard the saying, “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”  Well, that’s similar to what we feel - “If audiences aren’t happy, then we’re not happy!”   We take each and every comment seriously and we aim to make you comfortable and to entertain you - thanks for telling us how we do!

And, there was a bit of a sad note for the Matinee show.  Jules Corriere announced that Ester Mabel Yoder  from Virginia passed away this morning.  Mr. and Mrs. Yoder had given Jules her first chance at being a Playwright (in Yoder Barn) - about 20-30 shows ago.   They were so close that when Land of Spirit opened last year and Jules said this was one of her best shows ever, the Yoders drove all the way down from Virginia to see it!  Now that’s a pretty long drive for a couple in their 80’s!

I remember when the Yoders arrived in Lavonia.  They came walking in to 211 Main Street for dinner prior to the show.  When I saw them walk in, something told me they were the Yoder’s.  So being in a small town, I walked over to the table and said - ” You must be the Yoder’s from Virginia.”  I can still remember the smiles on their faces - they said “Yes we are, but how in the world did you know.”  I just smiled and said, “Welcome to small town Lavonia and the Land of Spirit.”  They were a lovely couple - both with a gleam in their eye for the theater(and for each other).  I know that it was only this morning that Ester Mabel left this world to be with her maker, but I suspect she may already be looking for a way to start a new play there.  And, I just bet with her determination she will be successful!  In our prayer circle we prayed for the Yoder Family and cast played the show this afternoon in honor of Ms. Ester Mabel!

We had several folks to come visit this weekend from other projects similar to Land of Spirit, and who work with Jules and Richard from CPI, Inc..  Friends were here from Allendale, SC; Birmingham, AL; and Asheville, NC.  It’s nice to be able to meet leadership personnel from other projects, we learn from each other.

For a few minutes tonight , during the play, I sat next to newcomers Mark Foster and Roy Benifield - I was taking photos of a few scenes I had missed and they were in between scenes.   I watched as they congratulated other cast members as they walked by - saying “good job tonight” - “you played that really well” - etc.  Now, Mark and Roy are doubles for the Walker Scene.  Tonight was Roy’s night to play the scene and when he finished and came off stage, Mark said, “You were really good tonight Roy, great job.”   Now, to others that might not meant much - but, to me it was an expression of professionalism for these two new cast members - both making their first appearance in any theater.  These two guys are not in competition with each other - but, are helping each other to become better and better in their individual performances - in order to have a more perfect show!  It made my heart smile. . .

My heart smiles every night as I watch Land of Spirit kids.   You can’t help but find yourself captivated by all the little ones - their smiles, their hugs, their laughter, and their love of acting!  Each one of these kids bring trememdous talent to the stage - and, it’s amazing to see how each of them grow from show to show.   From age 4 up, they learn their lines, all the songs in the show - and, most know everyone else’s lines, as well.  If you watch them real closely on stage you can sometime see them ‘mouthing’ other people’s lines. . .

In Gas Sugar Nylons and Chocolate Bars, my favorite scene to watch Spirit Kids is when they dance to the song “ Trouble Won’t Last.”  It’s when all cast are at one end - facing Main Stage - leaving LOS Kids to the back of adults.  Cari Turner spells out the name HITLER and cast “cringe and express fear.”  Spirit Kids have this choreography down pat - what can I say except they are “adorable” - they sing, dance, and perform as veteran actors!

While I am speaking of kids, let me say we missed the Arp family (Megan, Courtney, Brittany and Spencer) this weekend.  They were on a church mission trip and we look forward to having them back for the last two shows.  Caitlain May was gone this weekend, too - and, we look forward to having her back, as well.  Marilyn Montemayor played Trudy in the absence of Megan Arp and Caitlain May this weekend and did a superb job - and to think she only had week’s rehearsal.

Okay, time for bed.  I’ve rambled until 1:20.  Now, I cannot spell so it’s time to get some rest -

See you at the theater, Judy

Whew, what a night.  The show has been over for a little over two hours and I am still wound tighter than a string, I am hyper and tired.  It was a wonderful evening, with a great audience - and, the cast continues to gets better and better with each performance!  My mind is filled with lots of thoughts but they don’t go together as a theme for tonight’s blog - so, I will ramble.

First, there was a woman who called today from Toccoa, wanting tickets to see the show.  She said she had never heard of Land of Spirit but she went to (I believe) a water arobics class at the Y and she said the show was the talk of Toccoa.   Everyone at the Y was saying how wonderful it was.

Next, the Matinee for tomorrow is already a sell out!  Another tour bus (with 52) is coming, along with four or five church groups with 20-25 each.  Very few seats were purchased by individuals.    We’re looking forward to a fun afternoon - groups seem to be on a natural high and are ready for fun as they enter the door.  The smiles, the laughter, it makes all the hard work at LOS worthwhile.

There is a scene in the play called Morgan’s Liar’s Club - written about those real people who sit around and talk each morning at Morgan’s Hardware.   In tonight’s audience were several of Morgan’s Liars - including owners Martha and Larry Floyd.  And, their son Eddie who is at Morgan’s is in the play, too, long with his children Regan, Eliza Kate and Perrin.  It was good to have Morgan’s Liars in the audience and for them to see the gentlemen (did I really refer to them as gentlemen?) who play their characters.  This is a ‘hoot’ of a scene or must maybe there are a lot of “hoots IN the scene.”

Each night at intermission Jim Gothard asks all active or those who have served in the military to stand and be recognized.  Then, he announces they are to be treated with a free Chocolate Bar in the USO Canteen.  I don’t know how many have gone and collected their candy, but I do know it is through the kindness of Roy Benifield this is done.  Roy pays for each and every candy bar that goes to a veteran.  He says it is the least of what he can do for them - just look at what they have done for us.

We had two new cast members in tonight’s show.  One might think that strange since we have already completed 15 shows with only four remaining - but, the two new cast members were Cassidy and Ian Corriere, children of Playright Jules Corriere.   What an experience for these children to be able to tour with their Mom, visiting various communities across the United States.  That, in itself, is an education that cannot be purchased - it’s a rare experience and one I hope is treasured by the youngsters.

This is only our second season for Land of Spirit, but again tonight we had people come up and say - “Next year, I’m going to be on stage and not in the audience.  I don’t know when I have seen people having so much fun.”  And, they do - no, WE do!   And, another audience member commented ” you have the best and most friendly volunteers I have ever met.” - And, yes WE do!    We are so blessed to live in a community which really is “The Land of Spirit.”  It’s the spirit of her people that makes Franklin County a place we’re  proud to call home!

Kathy Beecham of Franklin Springs and one of AGLC’s newest board members, along with her brother and sister in law , were in the audience tonight.  Kathy said it brought tears to her eyes when their Mom and Dad were remembered by Zadie Gaines.   And, Kathy has now become an active LOS Volunteer.  She has ushered severed nights and is already talking about what she can do for LOS 2010!

And speaking of LOS 2010 - there is lots of fundraising to do in order to pay for the 2010 show.  Since we are down to the last case of Cookin’ in the Land of Spirit cookbooks, we’ve decided to ask AGLC about sponsoring an ALL NEW COOKBOOK with a publication date of late Fall 2009.   We’ll be asking cast members to submit recipes just in case we get approval at the next AGLC board meeting.  With only two shows next weekend (Thursday and Friday), it’s imperative we have recipes before they leave for the remaining days of summer.

The 2010 cookbook is in planning stages but thoughts going round seem to be shaping into a terrific layout!  There will be reicpes for CHOCOLATE, SWEET SWEET CHOCOLATE; SUGAR SUBSTITUTE recipes since sugar was rationed during the war( perfect for diabeties); and,  recipes that have anything to do with VICTORY GARDENS - all type VEGGIES and FRUITS, maybe even a canning recipe or two like they learned in Home Demonstration Clubs long ago.  Or, maybe a recipe for “Olivia’s Corn Jelly.”    We’re hoping to get ”Recipe Forms” out to cast and crew tomorrow or via email on Monday - this will allow the forms to be returned next weekend, the last two show nights (July 2-3).

And, speaking of July 2 - we’re having our 2009 Story Tellers come as guests that night.  At 5:30 PM we’ll be having the OFFICIAL 2009 CAST PHOTO made by Ken Moulder.  And,  FOLLOWING Thursday night’s performance we’ll be serving light refreshments to AGLC Board Members, Cast, Crew and Story Tellers and Lavonia officials in appreciation for this year’s production!

I said at the beginning it would be a night of rambling, and that it has.  Now that I have wound down and my eyes are heavy - it’s time I said good night.  Tomorrow will be another wonderful day as we perform TWO OF OUR REMAINING FOUR SHOWS!

See you at the theater, Judy
